Research Opportunities

Senior Thesis

The senior thesis provides you the opportunity to integrate your language knowledge and skills with research on a specific topic of your interest in one of our major programs. Work one-on-one with a faculty adviser on an original research or creative endeavor that showcases your intellectual growth and serves as the culmination of your undergraduate career. French Research

As a student in French and Francophone Studies, Romance Languages Major (French), or International Economics Romance Languages Major (French), you will serve as an ambassador for research and scholarship in the field. Our faculty and students actively engage with multiple institutes and centers across the University.

  • Work with a faculty member to apply for Nanovic Institute Research Grants
  • Write a senior thesis or a complete a capstone project
  • Participate in the Sorin Translation Project

Italian Research

Studying Italian at ND opens the door to a variety of possibilities and unique experiences, including working with top faculty on individual research projects. 

  • Work with a faculty member to apply for Italian Studies and Nanovic Institute Research Grants
  • Write a senior thesis or a complete a capstone project

Spanish Research

As a Spanish Major/Supplementary Major, Romance Languages Major (Spanish), or International Economics Romance Languages Major (Spanish), you will serve as an ambassador for research and scholarship in the field. Research Funding

Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP)

Facilitated by the Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts, the Undergraduate Research and Teaching Opportunity Program (UROP) is an exciting initiative designed to expose undergraduate students to the rigors and rewards of scholarship. Awards include summer fellowship grants up to $4500 and research and materials grants of $1750.

Center for Italian Studies Research Grants

The Center for Italian Studies contributes to the funding of research in Italian Studies by subsidizing a number of grants and fellowships for undergraduates.

Flatley Center for Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement Research Grants

The Flatley Center for Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement offers a variety of grants for many different kinds of undergraduate research. CUSE can help students develop and find funding for many different kinds of research to help make the most of their Notre Dame experience and expand the intellectual life at the University.

Kellogg/Kroc Undergraduate Research Grants

The Kellogg and Kroc Institutes offer summer research grants for undergraduate students at Notre Dame. The grants are intended for juniors whose interests include a clear international dimension related to the Kellogg Institute's themes or the themes of the Kroc Institute. Grants up to $5,000 each will be awarded for research abroad or, if demonstrably appropriate, in the United States. 

Nanovic Institute Research Grants

The Nanovic Institute supports independent student research in European Studies which requires travel to Europe for archival and/or field research.

The Center for Career Development offers assistance in finding a summer internship. They also have a funding program to support students during their summer internship experiences in the U.S. and abroad.
