Cabeza de Vaca’s Account and Other Texts

Author: Adriana Gutierrez Gutierrez

Cabeza de Vaca's book, yellow and black

A new volume, "Cabeza de Vaca’s Account and Other Texts," co-edited by our faculty member Carlos Jauregui and Luis Fernando Restrepo, has been released by the Modern Language Association (MLA).

The book brings together innovative scholarship and pedagogical approaches to Cabeza de Vaca’s Relación and related texts. It challenges

outdated readings that have overlooked the violence of Spanish imperialism, offering fresh and critical perspectives on colonialism, race, gender, and the literary canon.

From the overlooked role of Esteban—the enslaved African who traversed North America—to indigenous and Spanish women, and queer and intersectional readings of Cabeza de Vaca himself, this book reframes how we teach and understand these foundational texts.
