Professor Jauregui co-organize and curate the international exhibit
“Emiliano Zapata: 100 años, 100 fotos / “Emiliano Zapata: 100 Years 100 Photographs”
Emiliano Zapata (1879-1919), military leader of the Liberation Army of the South, is one of the most iconic figures of the Mexican Revolution. This exhibition commemorates the 100-year anniversary of his assassination, through the artistic installation of 100 photographs from the Gustavo Casasola Collection and other archives. Countering the institutional appropriation of Zapata’s imagery that buries the tradition of the oppressed, this exhibition tries to trigger certain politics of empathy with those who, like Zapata, wanted to derail the train of a thousand injustices that have yet to cease. Rather than commemorating death, we want to spark the affective power of visual memory to celebrate the claims and lives of those who were thrown in the common grave of history. “Emiliano Zapata: 100 Years, 100 Photographs” opens on April 10 at the the Universidad de los Andes. The Exhibit will also be hosted at the University of Arkansas, the Universidad del Atlántico, the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, and the University of London, during 2019. Professor Jauregui collaborates for this project with Gustavo Casasola Salamanca, David Solodkow, Olinca Olvera and other scholars and artists. Amelia Lindstrom and George Azcarate, graduate students in our department, also contribute to this exhibit.
