“Violence and representation in Latin America” focuses on one of the most prominent aspects of contemporary life: the social prevalence and symbolic construction of violence as a social signifier and as a (bio) political strategy that redefines the realm of subjectivity and the configuration of the social.   Theoretical and performative aspects related to the study of violence will be discussed in connection with the topics of territoriality, control, alterity and (in)civility.

This lecture and discussion are especially prepared for Prof. Olivera-Williams's graduate seminar, "Introduction to Theory and Research in Hispanic Literatures and Cultures." Other graduate students interested in the topic are enthusiastically invited. Event is open to Kellogg faculty fellows and colleagues working on the topic of violence and colonial and contemporary history and culture in the region.
