Salut Les Cubains (1962)/Memories of Underdevelopment (1968)
These two portraits of 1960s Cuba capture the spirit of life in the early days of the Revolution. Constructed almost entirely from  photographs taken by master French filmmaker Agnes Varda on a trip to Cuba in 1962, Salut les Cubains is an engaging essay on the nation’s music, culture and history. Set in the aftermath of the Bay of Pigs invasion, Memories of Underdevelopment follows a writer who struggles to come to terms with the new Cuban society as he commits to stay in his homeland while those close to him emigrate to the United States.
