“The Politics of Constitutional Change in Latin America”

Based on his recent book, Making Constitutions: Presidents, Parties, and Institutional Choice in Latin America(Cambridge University Press, 2013), Negretto will address the phenomenon of constitutional change and the determinants of constitutional choice in Latin America. He will also discuss the central components of the new research agenda on constitutional politics in political science and comparative constitutional law.

Gabriel L. Negretto is associate professor of political studies at the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económica (CIDE) in Mexico City, specializing in constitutional politics, institutional change and design, and Latin American political institutions. His articles have appeared inComparative Political Studies, Journal of Politics, British Journal of Political Science, Law & Society Review, Texas Law Review, Latin American Politics and Society, Journal of Latin American Studies, Government and Oppositionand Desarrollo Economico, among other journals. His most recent work is Making Constitutions: Presidents, Parties, and Institutional Choice in Latin America(Cambridge University Press, 2013).
A former Kellogg Institute visiting fellow, Negretto has taught at Columbia University, Princeton University, the New School for Social Research, Universidad de la República, and Universidad Torcuato Di Tella. He holds a law degree from the University of Buenos Aires as well as an MA in international affairs and a PhD in political science from Columbia University.
