Ph.D. Requirements
Basic degree requirements
- 10 seminars (30 credits) in Spanish Section of the RL&L department.
- 1 seminar (3 credits) Introduction to Critical Theory.
- 1 course (3 credits) and practicum in Teaching Methods.
- 3 seminars in other fields or directed independent study.
- [NB: For advanced students and those arriving with an MA, the above course load may be reduced, decided by petition on a case-by-case basis.]
- 15 dissertation credits (writing the dissertation).
- Comprehensive Exam (after the first year).
- Defense of the dissertation proposal (by the fifth semester or earlier).
- Defense of the doctoral dissertation (by the end of the tenth semester or earlier).

M.A. Requirements
The M.A. in Spanish requires
- completing 39 credit hours of coursework and exam preparation spread over two years;
- performing teaching duties in the Spanish language program during each of the four semesters of enrollment;

First Year
Fall Semester
- Introduction to Critical Theory.
- Methods: Second-language Acquisition.
- Teaching practicum.
- Seminar in literary and cultural studies (see future courses listed on the site).
Spring Semester
- 3 Seminars in literary and cultural studies (see future courses listed on the site).
Summer
Write the M.A. exam.
Second Year
