The event, inspired by the work of author Primo Levi, will include the performance of Simon Sargon's chamber setting of Levi poems, the US premiere of Ennio Morricone's "Se questo è un uomo", as well as student and faculty testimonies on the work, life, and legacy of Primo Levi.
Jewish Italian chemist and writer, Primo Levi (1919-1987), was the author of fiction, poetry, essays, memoirs, and translations, and is best known for his first work, "Se questo è un uomo" [If This Is A Man], which provides an account of his detention at Auschwitz, and offers one of the most compelling invitations to reflect on humanity to have emerged in European literature.
Conceived and produced by Camilla Tassi, and conducted by Caleb Wenzel, the event will be held in the Jordan Hall of Science, in recognition and celebration of Levi's bridging of the arts and the sciences in his work.
A student-led initiative, the event is a collaboration of the Department of Music, the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, Italian Studies at Notre Dame, and is also graciously supported by the Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts.
