Major and Supplementary Major Requirements

Major
Requirements
The first major in Spanish requires 30 credits or ten courses at the 20202 level and above including:
- ROSP 30310 (Textual Analysis);
- One upper-division (30000 or 40000) course in each of the four distribution areas (Early and Modern Peninsular, Early and Modern Spanish American);
- Four electives, at least two of which must be at the senior (40000) level or above;
- Senior Seminar, which may be taken in Fall or Spring of the senior year.
Equivalent courses from international study programs or other universities may be substituted with departmental approval. A minimum of 50 percent of the credits toward the major must be taken in residence at Notre Dame. No more than two courses at the 200 level may be applied toward the major. AP credits do not count toward the major in Spanish.
Supplementary Major Requirements
The supplementary major consists of 24 credits or eight courses 20202 and above, including:
- ROSP 30310 (Textual Analysis) ;
- One upper-division (30000 or 40000) course in each of the four distribution areas (Early and Modern Peninsular, Early and Modern Spanish American);
- Three electives, at least one of which must be at the senior (40000) level or above.
Equivalent courses from international study programs or other universities may be substituted with departmental approval. A minimum of fifty percent of the credits toward the major must be taken in residence at Notre Dame. No more than two courses at the 200 level may be applied toward the major. AP credits do not count toward the major in Spanish.
It is highly recommended that students interested in pursuing a Spanish first or supplementary major take one of the following courses: ROSP 20220, 27500, and/or ROSP 30320. Students declaring later than the second semester of their sophomore year should speak to their faculty advisor or the Undergraduate Coordinator on how ROSP 30320 can fit into their curriculum.
Honors Track Major Requirements
To be eligible for
the honors track in Spanish, students must be first majors with a minimum
GPA of 3.7 in the major, and at least seven courses completed toward
the major. Although Spanish majors are admitted to the honors
track by invitation, qualified students may petition for admission in
the second semester of their junior year.

Interdisciplinary Minors
Spanish courses may be applied toward one of the interdisciplinary minors offered through the Kellogg Institute, Institute for Latino Studies, the Medieval Institute and the Nanovic Institute for European Studies.
