Activities

Italian Theatre Workshop Laura ColangeloMany lectures, conferences, film screenings, social events, concerts, and cultural trips centered on Italian take place each year.  Many are announced in the semi-annual newsletter Lingua Italica; also check the websites, or join the email lists, of the Devers Program in Dante Studies, the Nanovic Institute, the Medieval Institute, and the DeBartolo Center for the Performing Arts

Italian Theatre Workshop

A full-length professionally produced play, entirely rehearsed and performed in Italian for credit by about twenty undergraduates each year, brings students to an extraordinary level of fluency and confidence.  Besides acting roles, there are many other positions in costuming, stage management, technical production, publicity, etc. The Italian Theatre Workshop incorporates a strong academic and critical component, and counts as a 3-credit course.

Italian Club – Circolo Italiano

An active undergraduate group, sponsoring trips to the opera or museums in Chicago, films, meals, cooking classes, an annual soccer tournament, and many other activities. A regular Italian Coffee Hour gathers Italianists and Italophiles from across campus.

Film screenings

A number of these are scheduled every year, through courses, through the Nanovic Institute, and through the initiative of faculty and the Italian Club.

Mini-drammi

As the final proficiency evaluation for third-semester Italian (20201), the students write and perform skits in Italian, over two evenings each semester.  These tend to be very clever, and highly entertaining.

Italian Soccer Tournament

A serious competition, involving most Italian courses, played and cheered in Italian.

Lingua Italica

A semi-annual newsletter for Italian Studies at Notre Dame, with recent news and events, and announcements of coming events, is distributed each semester to all students of Italian and allied faculty
