Honors Opportunities

The Honors Track

The honors track major consists of 33 credits or 11 courses.  In addition to the general requirements for the major, honors track students must complete an eleventh course at the graduate-level with a grade of A- or higher, in which they will write a substantive research paper which constitutes the honor's thesis. By invitation only, highly motivated students may consider the option of taking a semester-long Directed Reading Tutorial as the eleventh course, completing an honors thesis under faculty direction.

French majors are admitted to the honors track by invitation, although qualified students may petition for admission in the second semester of their junior year. To be eligible for the honors track, students must be first majors with a minimum GPA of 3.8 in French and have completed at least seven courses toward the major by the end of their junior year. They must also receive the written support of a professor in at least one of the required literature courses (ROFR 30310, ROFR 30710, or ROFR 30720). For full consideration, students should contact the Assistant Chair of the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures no later than March 15 of their junior year; applications from eligible seniors will be accepted through October 1st.

National French Honor Society

The Program in French and Francophone Studies in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures is proud to be a member of Pi Delta Phi, the National French Honor Society, since May 2000.

The purpose of the society is:

  • to recognize outstanding scholarship in the French language and its literatures;
  • to increase the knowledge and appreciation of Americans for the cultural contributions of the French-speaking world;
  • to stimulate and encourage French and Francophone cultural activities.

As a member of Pi Delta Phi, you...

  • become part of a vibrant community united by the appreciation of francophone cultures;
  • enhance your academic achievements by belonging to a national honor society;
  • enhance your professional portfolio by highlighting your excellence in French;
  • become eligible to apply for Pi Delta Phi sponsored scholarships: click on this link for information on these scholarships.

Scholars in Notre Dame's Chapter, Mu Phi, have been selected for this honor because they have demonstrated excellence in the study of the French language and of French and Francophone literatures and cultures. Pi Delta Phi members nationwide have gone on to excel in education, business, and public service.

Our Chapter normally admits third- and fourth-year undergraduates as well as graduate students at any level. In exceptional cases, second-year undergraduate students will be considered for admission.

General requirements (for undergraduates):

  1. Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 in all academic course work.
  2. Completion of at least three French courses at the 300 level or above, in residence at Notre Dame, with a GPA of at least 3.5 in French, with no grade lower than B+.

Those admitted will pay a one-time fee of $ 30.00 for life membership in the Society. They will be expected to support group functions and to promote awareness of and interest in French and Francophone cultures at the University and beyond.

The induction ceremony for new members of Pi Delta Phi at Notre Dame is held once a year, usually during National French Week in November (in 2007-2008, it was exceptionally held for seniors only, during Commencement week). In addition to membership in the National French Honor Society and remission of their diploma and honor insignia at the induction ceremony, graduating seniors receive the tri-colored cord and are recognized, along with their families, at the Department's graduating reception in May.
