Wednesday, April 11, 4:30 PM, Eck Visitors Center Auditiorium: "Outrageous Fortune: Luck and the Holocaust," A lecture by Robert Gordon, University of Cambridge.
In this lecture, sponsored by the Nanovic Institute for European Studies, Robert Gordon looks at an array of different responses to the Holocaust – in books, films, popular science, and the work of survivors such as Imre Kertesz and Primo Levi – to make sense of the strange and compelling role played by luck in our understanding of this most appalling of historical events. What remains of our common conceptions of good and bad luck after the horrors of the concentration camps?
This event is part of the Primo Levi Events and Lectures, Spring 2012, co-sponsored by the Nanovic Institute for European Studies and the PhD in Literature Program. For the most up-to-date information on the event, please visit the Italian Studies website>

Thursday, April 12, 4:30-6:00 PM, Special Collections in the Hesburgh Library: “Auschwitz--Italy,” Research Seminar by Robert Gordon (Cambridge).
Robert Gordon (Cambridge) will lead a seminar exploring certain aspects of Italy's complicated and often contradictory responses to the Holocaust over the long postwar era. It does so by way of posing a simple set of questions: when, how and why did the word Auschwitz, and the place it designates, become part and parcel of Italian culture and language?
This event is part of the Primo Levi Events and Lectures, Spring 2012, co-sponsored by the Nanovic Institute for European Studies and the PhD in Literature Program. For the most up-to-date information on the event, please visit the Italian Studies website>
